A college that works with young people who have a range of needs, from autism spectrum disorder to oppositional behaviour disorder, is campaigning for a pedestrian crossing on the busy road by its site.
Liberty College is based in Enterprise Road at the Westwood Industrial Estate. The area is a centre for numerous businesses and experiences constant traffic, including delivery vehicles.
The college has launched a Save Liberty, Save Lives campaign, with director Michelle Smith saying “it may only be a matter of time before someone is injured” if action isn’t taken.
The college is asking for the pedestrian crossing for its learners and also others who need to travel past the busy industrial estate,
The campaign was launched with help from now former Margate mayor Katie Pope who provided guidance on building community support.
The college says it has had limited engagement from council representatives but does have the backing of experienced campaigner Charlotte Fisher from the charity Love and Power, whose expertise is helping to strengthen and drive the campaign forward.
Highlighting the urgency of the campaign, Director Michelle Smith said: “People drive down this road incredibly fast, often ignoring the 20mph speed limit.
“We are aware of cars being damaged and several near misses. We are deeply concerned that it may only be a matter of time before someone is injured on this road.
“A crossing would make it safer not only for our learners, but also for the neighbouring school and the wider local community.”
A petition has been launched by a concerned user of the industrial estate, Adina Oros, who says: “Currently, the absence of a designated pedestrian crossing poses a serious risk.
“Every day, students, staff, and locals must dodge cars, hoping the drivers see them in time. This is a daily worry for many of us who fear that it’s only a matter of time before someone gets injured.
“An official crossing would ensure that all members of the community can move safely and freely. It would provide peace of mind for the students, their families, and educators, knowing that there’s a dedicated space for safe passage.
“This isn’t just a logistical improvement for the area; it’s a necessity for safety—a clearly defined crossing would communicate to drivers that pedestrians have a right to cross safely.
“Furthermore, statistics highlight that areas with properly marked crossings see significantly fewer accidents involving pedestrians.
“We urge the local council and transport authorities to take immediate action to install a pedestrian crossing for our college and the adjacent secondary school.
“This simple act can prevent future accidents and ensure a safer environment for everyone who lives, works, and learns here.”
The college is urging people to sign the petition and to email county councillor Jamie Henderson for his support.
