Liberty College learners help revitalise Pie Factory Music

Learners from Liberty College are making a positive impact in the local community through a volunteering partnership with Pie Factory Music, helping to transform and regenerate the creative space for future users.

Over recent weeks, learners have been attending weekly volunteering sessions, taking part in a variety of practical tasks including sanding, painting, weeding, cleaning, filling holes and general maintenance work. Their enthusiasm, commitment, and willingness to get involved has been praised by both college staff and the team at Pie Factory Music.

The project began following discussions with Andre, Operations Manager at Pie Factory Music, who is leading plans to refresh and revitalise the venue to create a welcoming and usable space for the wider community. Liberty College learners have embraced the opportunity, working alongside staff to support the regeneration efforts.

“It has been fantastic to see everybody getting stuck in and so eager to help,” said Amy, the work experience coordinator for Liberty College. “This project provides learners with valuable hands-on experience while making a meaningful contribution to the local community.”

Volunteering sessions take place once a week, with groups attending either a morning session or an afternoon session. The structured, shorter sessions ensure that learners remain engaged while developing practical skills and teamwork experience in a supportive environment.

Pie Factory Music is providing the main resources needed for the project, including paint and equipment, while Liberty College is supporting learners with overalls and additional resources. Liberty staff members accompany and supervise all groups, working alongside learners to encourage participation and teamwork.

The college supports students with a range of additional needs, including visual impairments, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), anxiety and other conditions that can make navigating busy roads particularly challenging.

As well as improving an important community space, the volunteering project offers learners valuable work-related experience that can strengthen future job and further education applications.
