Learners at Liberty College, a Post 16 SEND college in Margate, have returned from this year’s highly anticipated trip to Disneyland Paris, bringing back with them unforgettable memories, new friendships, confidence, independence and valuable real-life experiences that will support their journey into adulthood.
Throughout the visit, learners were immersed in the magical world of Disney, where they had the opportunity to meet their favourite characters, experience a wide range of rides and enjoy the atmosphere that makes Disneyland Paris a special destination.
A key focus of the trip was developing independence, with learners encouraged to take greater responsibility for themselves throughout their time away. They managed their spending money, made decisions about rides and activities, and took an active role in planning their day. These opportunities allowed learners to practise decision-making, organisation and time management skills.
Confidence building was evident across all aspects of the trip. Learners showed increased self-assurance when navigating busy environments, communicating with staff and members of the public and making independent choices. Everyday activities, such as ordering food, asking for assistance, and engaging with new experiences, became important stepping stones in helping learners believe in their own abilities.
The experience also supported essential life skills around independence in social and practical situations. Learners developed confidence in handling money, budgeting for souvenirs and meals, and understanding the importance of making considered choices. In dining settings, particularly buffet-style environments, learners were supported in identifying suitable food options, understanding allergen information, and ensuring their dietary needs were met—helping them advocate for themselves and build independence in managing their own wellbeing.
Staff observed significant progress in learners’ confidence over the course of the visit. Many demonstrated increased resilience, a willingness to try new things, and growing independence in situations that may previously have felt challenging.
Director Michelle Smith said: “This trip is always a fantastic opportunity for our learners to explore the world beyond the classroom in a supportive and exciting environment. It’s wonderful to see them not only having fun but also developing key life skills that will benefit them long into the future.”
Liberty College thanked all the learners who took part and represented the college community so positively throughout the trip. Special thanks were also given to parents and carers for their continued support in the lead-up to the visit.
